Board Approves Plan to Continue Reclaimed Water Use Agreement

DFW AIRPORT, Texas – Dec. 3, 2020 – DFW Airport’s commitment to sustainability reaches covers many processes and resources, and during the December 2020 DFW Airport Board meeting members unanimously approved an agreement to continue with its reclaimed water use agreement.

Since 2009, DFW Airport has purchased reclaimed water from the City of Fort Worth. As part of its sustainability best management practices, the Airport uses reclaimed water for non-potable water applications such as irrigation and cooling tower make up. The substitution of reclaimed water for potable water provides benefits for the North Texas Region as its population continues to increase by reducing the strain on regional potable water supplies.

Reclaimed water constitutes approximately 10-percent of the Airport’s overall water usage. About 50-percent of the water used by the Airport’s central utilities plant is reclaimed water, and the Airport’s central utilities plant powers the air conditioning in the terminal. DFW Airport is one of the only – if not the only – major businesses in North Texas using reclaimed water in its central utilities plant to power its HVAC systems.

The approved contract changes the way DFW Airport is billed by the City of Fort Worth. There are no material financial impacts to the change in the agreement; merely a change in the billing methodology based on credits.

Among other actions approved by the Board during the Dec. 3, 2020 meeting were:

  • The Board approved the extension of a contract with Aero Snow Removal, LLC, of Westbury, N.Y., for snow removal services.
  • The Board extended a project management contract with HNTB Corporation of Dallas through March 2022.
  • The Board approved the transfer of up to $602,000 in customer facility charge funds to the fund for operation and maintenance of the rental car center.
