Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has been recognized with a Balchen/Post Award honorable mention for Outstanding Achievement in Airport Snow and Ice Control. The award, presented at the 55th Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium in Buffalo, NY, celebrates "Snow Crews" at airports worldwide for their efforts in maintaining safe airfield operations during the 2022-23 winter weather season.
"Although North Texas doesn't typically experience winter weather on the scale of our northern peers, the past three winters have highlighted the challenges that ice and snow pose for our airport," said DFW Executive Vice President of Operations Chris McLaughlin. "This prestigious award is a testament to the dedicated work of our entire team and partners, as well as the improvements DFW has made by strategically leveraging our technology and resources during weather events.”
The region endured a record-breaking and hazardous winter storm in 2022 and several instances of treacherous icy conditions over the past several years, including this February. DFW operational leaders continually review actions after each weather event, suggesting ways to enhance the Airport’s future approach.
The award committee took the following factors into account during the selection process:
• In-depth preparedness
• Effectiveness of the snow and ice control program
• Timeliness and accuracy of communications during snow and ice control efforts
• Post-storm activities
