Sam Coats received both his Doctor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.  He joined the DFW Airport Board in February 2012 as a representative of the city of Dallas. 

Mr. Coats has extensive aviation experience from serving as President of Muse Air Corporation until its acquisition by Southwest Airlines Company as well as having held senior management positions with Continental Airlines, Inc., Southern Cross Airlines Holdings in Australia, Southwest Airlines Company, Braniff Airways, Inc. and Texas International Airlines, Inc.  Mr. Coats has also practiced law with Jenkens & Gilchrist law firm in Dallas and served as a member of the Texas legislature.

His private sector experience includes being President and Chief Executive Officer of Schlotzsky’s, Inc. (fast casual dining restaurants) and S.I. Restructuring, Inc. from June 2004 until March 2006 where he was hired to restructure the company.  As a part thereof, Schlotzsky’s, Inc. filed under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in August 2004.  During his career, Mr. Coats also was President and Chief Executive Officer of several other companies, including Sammons Travel Group/Adventure Tours USA (a package tour operator), PROS Revenue Management, Inc. (a leading provider of airline revenue management software systems), and Trinity Texas Corporation (a diversified private holding company involved in real estate development, quick lubrication centers, and oil and gas).

Since 2006 Mr. Coats has focused on private aviation consulting, corporate board service, and civic and nonprofit board service.  His corporate board service includes directorships with Safety-Kleen, Inc. and Texas Industries, Inc.  In addition, Mr. Coats has served on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including the North Texas Crime Commission, the Valley International Airport (in Harlingen, Texas), North Texas Public Broadcasting, The Plan Fund (a micro lender to clients who have no conventional credit capabilities) and Central Dallas Community Development Corporation (dedicated to providing affordable housing to low-income clients and permanent housing to the homeless).
