Environmental Operations Analyst Ryan Spicer got to see what only many have only experienced through newspaper photos and television specials when he volunteered to build houses for displaced New Orleans musicians.
“I’ve seen so much stuff in the media about how much the devastation is still there a year and a half later,” Spicer said. “And I’d always kind of wanted to do something with habitat humanity.”
Although Louisiana is only a state-line over to the East, it remains a world away from what most people know as home after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the cultural epicenter in 2005. Spicer helped build a floor structure for brand new houses in the 70-unit single family home area known as Musician's Village. Located in New Orleans’ Upper 9th ward, the housing division will include the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, dedicated to the education and development of homeowners and others who will live nearby.
“It was just a good experience all around,” Spicer said. “We’ve got a lot of responsibilities to take care of the office, and it just kind of worked out that I would have that time available to do that and come out.”
