Interactive 3-D sculptures, 42-foot long paintings and 20-foot diameter floor mosaics – that doesn’t sound like your typical airport terminal, but it does help describe DFW’s new International Terminal D. DFW International Airport’s $6 million commissioned art program is designed to enhance International Terminal D as well as the 10 Skylink train stations. The program celebrates the Airport’s world-class distinction and expresses the dynamic culture of the North Texas region. More than 30 local, national and international artists were selected to be a part of the Airport’s first-ever Art Program.
Part of the program focused on integrating the artwork into the architecture of the new terminal and train stations. There are 13 paintings and sculptures in International Terminal D, and 12 stone and mosaic floor medallions located at approximately every third gate. These large-scale works welcome guests and serve as excellent meeting places. The Skylink stations in all five terminals each have 30 foot x 180 foot terrazzo floor designs. All of the artwork livens up the Terminal and train stations, and adds an entertaining and enriching experience for travelers.
Five pieces of commissioned artwork are located outside security, so guests who are dropping off or picking up passengers, or who are staying at the integrated Grand Hyatt DFW, have the opportunity to share in the public art experience.
In addition to the $6 million Public Art Program, DFW happily welcomes four sculptures on loan from the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas to enhance the new terminal. The DFW Sculpture Garden is located just outside the International Terminal D parking garage on the Arrivals Level. Mr. Raymond Nasher, founder of the Nasher Sculpture Center, loaned works from his personal collection to display at the new terminal. As a benefit to DFW Airport travelers, a $2 discount on adult admission will be offered to visitors who bring a DFW International Airport boarding pass to the Sculpture Center’s admissions desk. This limited time offer expires September 30.
