Stunning Nasher Sculptures Will Welcome the World to International Terminal D
DFW Continues Innovative Programs to Promote Art
Four works from the internationally acclaimed Nasher Sculpture Center will be displayed this summer at their new home – DFW’s world-class International Terminal D, which opens July 23. The Dallas-based Nasher Sculpture Center has agreed to loan four works to DFW for display at a newly created sculpture garden under the arrivals level canopy at International Terminal D. The Nasher sculptures will welcome international passengers to DFW International Airport and Texas.

The sculpture garden is just one part of the DFW Airport Art Program. An Airport Art Advisory Committee (AAAC) was created in 2003 to review and recommend artists for inclusion in the Airport’s art program. The committee consisted of nine members, including Mr. Raymond Nasher, founder of the Nasher Sculpture Center. His involvement on the AAAC led to discussions with Airport staff about placing some work from his personal collection on display at the new terminal.

The four works that will be featured are by Mark di Suvero, Anthony Caro, John Newman and Mac Whitney. The Caro and Newman sculptures are part of The Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection and the di Suvero and Whitney sculptures are on long-term loan to the Nasher Sculpture Center. Mark di Suvero’s New Beginning counterbalances two massive, steel forms that offset each other, much as their shiny and weathered surfaces contrast. Anthony Caro’s welded assemblage of steel elements, Fanshoal, is made of curved and sloping shapes contrasted with pointed and squared elements. John Newman’s Torus Orbicularis suggests both biological and mechanical forms like flowers and fossils, as well as turbines and rotors. Chicota, by Mac Whitney, combines the interlocking V-shapes of earlier sculptures with a closed ribbon of steel.

Inside International Terminal D, there are more than 20 other sculptures, paintings and mosaics. Additionally, all eight of the new Skylink stations currently in use have terrazzo floors. Click here to view other works of art in the new terminal and Skylink stations.

The Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas is dedicated exclusively to the exhibition of modern and contemporary sculpture. As a benefit to DFW International Airport travelers, the Nasher Sculpture Center will offer a $2 discount on adult admission for visitors who bring a DFW International Airport boarding pass to the Sculpture Center’s admissions desk. This limited time offer will begin on July 1 and expires September 30.
