DFW Is In The Midst Of A Yearlong Runway Safety Campaign
“I Brake for Runways” Will Help Increase Awareness and Minimize Incursions
DFW Airport is delivering an important message to all employees at the Airport. The “I Brake for Runways” campaign is designed to make employees think twice about runway safety, while increasing awareness of safety rules. Bumper and dashboard stickers can already be seen on Airport vehicles. Flight line, airport ground crew and airport traffic control tower posters will appear later this year to help reinforce the safety message. Literature and safety tips will continue to be distributed to DFW air carriers and general aviation pilots. This is all a concerted effort to further DFW’s excellent safety performance.

A runway incursion is any occurrence on an airport runway involving an aircraft, vehicle or person on the ground that creates a collision hazard, or results in a loss of required separation length with an aircraft taking off, landing or intending to land. DFW has an impressive safety record and national reputation for airfield operations, but felt it was imperative to keep runway safety in the forefront of employees’ minds in order to sustain its industry-leading record.

The Airport is sponsoring the “I Brake for Runways” program in conjunction with the Runway Safety Action Team (RSAT), which is comprised of members of the DFW Airport Board, FAA, tenant airlines and aviation support services. With nearly 1,800 runway crossings per day, DFW wants to make sure each of those crossings is safe. The yearlong campaign was designed to focus on certain groups throughout each quarter of 2004. The campaign was organized during the first quarter of the year, with the concentration on ground vehicle operators taking place right now. Aircraft pilot groups will be targeted next quarter, with Airport traffic control tower employees rounding out the program during the last quarter of the year.

DFW has received numerous inquiries from other airports about the program, and has provided them with campaign kits consisting of stickers, sample posters, an informational CD and press communications. These kits also were mailed to airline pilots and other aviation industry organizations.

DFW is proud of its safety programs and safety record. In 2002, DFW won the FAA's Southwest Region Safety Award for its industry-leading efforts to operate a safe airfield. Airports around the world have adopted a number of DFW’s safety training and operations regulations. This new campaign is intended to build on that reputation, and make DFW an even safer place for the traveling public and all employees.
