| DFW Airport will implode
the 27-year-old, 11-story Hyatt Hotel West on Sunday, September
16 at 12:01 a.m. to give way to the construction of the future
International Terminal D, the "crown jewel" of the
Airport's $2.6 billion Capital Development Program.
This two million square-foot international terminal will
consolidate all international arrivals and departures into
one terminal, as well as accommodate some domestic flights.
The massive facility will include 120 ticketing positions
with a Federal Inspection Facility capable of processing 2,800
passengers per hour. Panoramic views, 70-foot ceilings, and
more than 100,000 square feet of concessions are just some
of its amazing features.
The implosion of the Hyatt Hotel West, which has been closed
to the public since April, will make room for the new 8,100-space
parking garage that will open with the new International Terminal
in 2005. A new 300-room Grand Hyatt Hotel, complete with a
rooftop swimming pool, will be integrated into the terminal
so travelers can check-in for the night without ever leaving
the building. The hotel will feature meeting facilities, conference
rooms, a ballroom and even a rooftop swimming pool and spa
to assist in positioning DFW Airport as a true world-class
facility.
Terminal D will enable DFW Airport to meet the growing demand
for global travel. The $1.08 billion terminal will come equipped
with 23 wide-body aircraft gates to capitalize on DFW's enviable
capacity and will accommodate 37,000 passengers daily or 12.8
million annually.
In addition to a new terminal, construction of a bi-directional
Automated People Mover (APM) system is also underway. The
APM will connect Terminal D with existing terminals A, B,
C and E, as well as future Terminal F. The APM system will
enable the Airport to transport passengers between the farthest
two stations in less than nine minutes and provide an average
terminal connect time of only five minutes.
Currently, DFW Airport contributes a total of $11.2 billion
annually to the North Texas economy, $2.3 million of which
comes from international passenger air service. With the implementation
of the Capital Development Program, it is estimated that DFW's
investment will generate an additional $34 billion in economic
impact and an additional 77,000 new jobs over the next 15
years.
With a scheduled completion date of 2005, DFW is moving forward
with its Capital Development Program to ensure that it continues
to be the economic generator for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
and remain competitive with airports around the world.
To celebrate the major milestone of the Hyatt Hotel West implosion,
a "Rock-n-Rubble" party will be held at the Cargo
Hanger on the tarmac of DFW Airport. The family-friendly party
will benefit the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and United
Way of Tarrant County
The event begins at 7:00 p.m. with a variety of entertainment,
music, a family fun area, the tastes of the Metroplex provided
by area restaurants and vendors, and raffles for great prizes.
The evening will culminate at midnight with a contest winner
pushing the button to implode Hyatt Regency DFW Hotel's West
Tower. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Everyone
18 years and older attending the event will be entered to
win a trip.
The admission to the event is $5 per person with children
10 years old and under free when accompanied by an adult.
