DFW’s First Direct Flight to China Proves Successful |
|
 |
DFW congratulates China Cargo Airlines on its first year of service from the Airport. The MD-11 freighter service to Shanghai started at three flights per week on February 19, 2004, and jumped to four flights per week in September due to its high volume of cargo. Compared to its first full month of service in March, the carrier increased its monthly cargo load by 169 percent in December. Thanks in part to China Cargo’s service increase, DFW currently has a total of 33 cargo flights per week into Asia.
The China Cargo Airlines flight is DFW’s first direct flight to China and positions the Airport as the leader in Asian cargo for the southern and eastern United States. The new service is a direct reflection of the surge in the Asian cargo business that DFW has experienced in the last several years. DFW’s international cargo grew 27.6 percent in 2004, reaching 245,000 metric tonnes. Asian freighter cargo comprised approximately two-thirds of DFW’s total international cargo, and increased 41.5 percent in 2004. As a result of this and previous years’ growth, foreign flag cargo at DFW has increased more than 700 percent in the last decade. DFW was very pleased to add China Cargo Airlines to its group of foreign flag carriers one year ago.
China Cargo Airlines is based in Shanghai, the economic center of China and a significant hub for airfreight. It is the cargo arm of China Eastern Airline Corporation, and also operates the belly space of China Eastern Airlines' passenger flights. The widebody freighter’s route starts in Shanghai and goes to Seattle, DFW and Chicago, and then back to Seattle, on to Beijing and finally arriving at its home base in Shanghai.
China Cargo Airlines’ flights have given shippers from North Texas and across the region unprecedented access to China. In addition to directly linking DFW to China, this flight also links China to Central and South America. DFW congratulates China Cargo Airlines on its incredible first year of service at the Airport and looks forward to another prosperous year. |
